2. What personal information we collect
We collect only what we need to run an editorial website (IPP 1):
- Contact form details — your name, email address, chosen subject and the content of your message.
- Newsletter subscription — your email address and the date and time of your consent.
- Technical information — basic server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested) generated automatically when you visit, used for security and troubleshooting.
- Cookie preferences — the choices you make in our cookie banner.
We collect this information directly from you (IPP 2), and we tell you at the point of collection what it is for (IPP 3). We do not collect personal information by unfair or intrusive means (IPP 4).
3. Why we collect it
- To answer your messages and enquiries.
- To send you our weekly newsletter, if — and only if — you have opted in.
- To keep the website secure and working properly.
- To understand, in aggregate and only with your consent, how the site is read.
We use personal information only for the purposes it was collected for, or directly related purposes (IPPs 10 and 11). We do not sell personal information. Ever.
4. Email and the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act
Our newsletter is strictly opt-in, as required by the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007. Every issue includes a working unsubscribe link that takes effect promptly. We keep a record of your consent for as long as you are subscribed.
5. How we store and protect it
Personal information is held on secured servers and protected by reasonable safeguards against loss, misuse and unauthorised access (IPP 5). Contact correspondence is kept only as long as needed to resolve your enquiry, and newsletter details only while you remain subscribed (IPP 9). We take reasonable steps to ensure information we hold is accurate before we use it (IPP 8).
6. Disclosure and cross-border transfer
We do not disclose your personal information to third parties except: service providers who host our website and deliver our email (bound by appropriate safeguards); or where disclosure is required by law. If any information is stored with providers located outside New Zealand, we only use providers whose protections are comparable to the Privacy Act 2020, as required by IPP 12.
7. Your rights: access and correction
Under IPPs 6 and 7 you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and to ask us to correct it. Email [email protected] and we will respond within 20 working days as required by the Act. There is no charge.
8. Privacy breaches
If a privacy breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and affected individuals as required by Part 6 of the Privacy Act 2020.
9. Unique identifiers
We do not assign unique identifiers to visitors beyond what is technically necessary to operate the website (IPP 13).
10. Complaints
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, please contact us first at [email protected] — we take complaints seriously and will respond promptly. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner: privacy.org.nz.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, the new version will be published on this page with an updated date. Material changes affecting newsletter subscribers will be notified by email.
