Your skyship is the real protagonist of Auric Skies, and its upgrade tree is the map of the whole adventure. Here is the efficient route through it — what unlocks what, and where your early coin works hardest.
The three that matter first
1. Stormcloth Rigging (Chapter 2). Buy this before anything else. It halves weather damage in the mid-heights, which means fewer repair stops, which means every other upgrade arrives sooner. Available from the shipwright at Brasshaven once the crew's first side story completes.
2. Deepdraft Envelope (Chapter 3). Your key to the cloud floor and the underworld beneath it — where the game hides its best salvage and its most striking hours. Requires sunken-kingdom alloy: three pieces circulate in Chapter 3, and the merchant at the Tin Lantern always carries one.
3. The Long Gallery (Chapter 3). The crew-quarters expansion looks cosmetic. It is not. It unlocks the second tier of every crew member's personal story, and those stories carry the game's finest writing and several unique ship systems — the cook's galley upgrade alone (permanent stat food) pays for the gallery twice over.
The vertical ladder
Upgrades gate altitude, and altitude gates everything. In order: Stormcloth Rigging opens safe mid-height trade routes; the Deepdraft Envelope opens the floor; sun-rated canvas (Chapter 4, expensive) opens the upper airs and the flying kingdom's ruins. Do not rush sun-rated canvas — the upper airs are balanced for late-game boarding strength, and an early visit is a beautiful way to lose a cargo hold.
Three you can skip
The ornamental figureheads are pure vanity (lovely, but coin-hungry at the exact point the Deepdraft Envelope needs funding). The auxiliary cargo pontoons slow your turn rate in the storm chapters where agility is survival. And the second galley is redundant once the cook's story upgrade lands — one of the few places the game lets you buy a mistake.
The order in one line
Rigging → Envelope → Gallery → hull tier two → sun-rated canvas → everything else as the coin arrives. Follow that spine and the sky opens exactly as fast as the story deserves.
