The Hollow King guards the door between Marrowfall's third act and everything after it, and he is where most journeys stall. Our reviewer needed twenty attempts; with this preparation, you should need five.
Before the fog wall
Most players skip the single most useful step: the Bellringer's Oath. Speak to the sexton in the flooded chapel (left of the boss stairs, behind the collapsed pew row) and accept his oath to silence the tower. This removes the fight's third-phase bell adds entirely — the duel becomes winnable on fundamentals alone.
Gear: anything with stagger resistance. His grab combo tracks rolls but cannot break poise stacked above 40. Two-hand your weapon; shields teach bad habits here, because every one of his true openings follows a blocked hit you should have dodged.
Phase one: the false king
He opens with slow, readable cathedral-sword arcs — but every third swing is a feint that holds half a beat longer. Do not punish the second swing; that is the trap that kills impatient players. Wait for the overhead slam (both hands over the crown), dodge into his left side, and take exactly two hits. Greed at this stage is the entire difficulty of the fight.
Phase two: the crown descends
At 60% health he crushes the crown onto his head and gains a delayed shockwave on every strike. The rhythm inverts: now you dodge late, on the shockwave rather than the blade. His stamina is finite in this phase — after any four-hit chain he must kneel for two full seconds. That kneel is your damage window; nothing else is.
Phase three: the empty throne
With the Bellringer's Oath done, phase three is phase two with more health and a desperation grab at 15% — signalled by him dropping his sword arm limp. The moment the arm drops, sprint away, wait out the lunge, then finish him. Without the oath… bring friends and forgiveness.
One duel, three rhythms, no shortcuts. When he falls, the cathedral falls silent — and you have finished the hardest fight in the game.
